United States Korean Martial Arts Federation (USKMAF)

The United States Korean Martial Arts Federation's roots go back to the late 1970's when several American instructors in the Southeastern United States joined forces in order to increase the amount of knowledge available to their students. By conducting clinics, seminars and testings at central locations, these instructors set a new higher standard for the average student to attain. During the late 1980's, under the leadership of GM J. R. West, interest in the organization went well beyond it's original regional boundaries and became the USKMAF that exists today.

The requirements for membership are rather simple and straightforward. Members are required to operate a school or class within the USA, teach a recognized system of Korean Martial Arts, Korean philosophy, and Korean-style techniques, use Korean terminology, and have instructors and students wear a traditional Korean uniform. Regular attendance at organizational twice-yearly seminars is expected. Dan testing and seminar fees are very reasonable for those schools that meet the criteria. USKMAF'S GOAL IS TO INSTRUCT FIRST AND CERTIFY SECOND.

GM J.R West & Grand Master

GM West was introduced to Hapkido while assigned to the Korean 25th Infantry or "Tiger Division" operating throughout the central highlands of Vietnam. The "Tiger Division" has long been considered one of the premier fighting groups of modern times.

GM West's instructor for the first four years of his martial arts career was Master Kim, Jung-soo, a member of the now legendary "M-21" martial arts training program. "M-21" was organized in 1963 in Korea in order to provide expert martial arts training to the combined forces stationed in Vietnam.

GM West attained the rank of First Degree Black Belt in May of 1967.After GM West's return from Vietnam in 1970, he was associated with Dr. He-Young Kimm, 9th Degree Black Belt, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Dr. Kimm is one of the foremost HapKiDo practitioners in the world, and, in 1996, Dr. Kimm, wrote a A Letter of Recommendation, stating that it was time for GM West to take his place as a completely independent leader in the field of HapKiDo. On May 20, 2005, at a dinner in Seoul Korea, Dr. He Young Kimm presented a new sign to his senior student whom he said had earned the title and should hereafter be addressed as Grandmaster West. In addition GM West has taught HapKiDo in the following nations: USA, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, Republic of Korea, Republic of Vietnam, and Thailand.
